The House Within: A Five-Floor Model of Identity Architecture and Its Independent Convergence with Dynamic Psychiatry

This paper argues that The House Within (THW), a five-floor model of emotional and relational architecture developed across three decades of clinical social work and psychotherapeutic practice, offers dynamic psychiatry an independently-derived confirmation of one of its central claims: that identity is a structural, relationally-built capacity rather than a fixed trait. THW’s Ground floor — a state of emotional homeostasis enabling purposeful engagement with the world — functions as Ammon’s basic identity does: the minimal stability without which self-creative growth cannot occur. A de-identified clinical case illustrates this directly: a client’s entrenched Basement state — deficient self-assertion masked as perfectionism, and destructive resentment directed at successful colleagues — gave way, through normalisation and a reworked relationship to failure, to constructive, relationally-validated engagement at work. That two frameworks — one rooted in classical psychoanalysis and group dynamics, the other in social work practice, psychoanalysis, physics and the work of Dante — converge on this structural triad suggests it is clinically fundamental rather than tradition-bound. This paper sets out THW’s model and proposes it as a complementary,teachable clinical vocabulary for dynamic psychiatry.
